Ministerial Transition and Search

On December 4, 2017, our Senior Pastor and Head of Staff, the Rev. Paul E. Gilmore announced to session that he had been extended and accepted a call from the Chicago Presbytery to serve a church in Wilmette, on the north shore.  Our congregation voted to make a recommendation to the Presbytery to dissolve its ministerial relationship with Rev. Gilmore.  The Presbytery approved this recommendation thereby making way for us to begin the process of identifying and hiring a Interim Pastor until such time that a new, permanent Senior Pastor and Head of Staff can be called.  Importantly, it should be noted that until an Interim Pastor is hired, our Associate Pastor for Children, Youth and Families, the Rev. Kathryn Kibbie Laird has agreed to assume the role of acting Senior Pastor, Head of Staff.

Interim Pastor and Interim Search Committee

When Rev. Gilmore announced his intent to depart, he initiated a formal process that is clearly outlined in our Book of Order. Once plans were communicated broadly, the Personnel Committee appointed an Interim Search Committee to hire a Interim Pastor as soon as possible. The Interim Committee is comprised of Natasha Lombardi, Andrew Gifford, Bob Caird, Lynn Quinn, and Constanze Sheridan; and is supported by Rev. Shannan Vance-Ocampo, our General Presbyter, and the Rev. Jim Fenimore, therapist and church systems specialist, as well as the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of Southern New England. The Interim Committee creates and circulates an information package for potential Interim Pastor candidates, evaluates the respondents, and ultimately submits a recommendation to Session for its final approval. To create a comprehensive and reflective information package, the Interim Committee collects feedback from Session and the congregation relating to our key values and priorities. Given the transitional nature of the Interim Pastor, the Interim Committee focuses primarily on the short-term needs of the church while respecting our key values and priorities. Members of the congregation should feel comfortable reaching out to anyone on the Interim Committee to provide input or feedback.

Calling a Permanent Senior Pastor and Head of Staff

The process of calling a permanent Senior Pastor will be run by a separate Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) consisting of nominated church members  approved by our congregation. The preparation for this process, guided by the PNC, is much more extensive than the process the Interim Committee embarks on and involves considerable self-reflection of the congregation as we decipher the call for Rev. Gilmore’s permanent replacement.
